Context of Holograph | William Courtenay was the 9th Earl of Devon. He succeeded to the title of 5th Baronet Courtenay on 14 October 1788, to the title of 3rd Viscount Courtenay of Powderham Castle, co. Devon, on 14 October 1788 and to that of the Earl of Devon on 15 March 1831, after the House of Lords declared his right to the Earldom. He was known as "Kitty" to family and friends, and was said by many to be one of the most beautiful boys in Britain. On his death the Viscountancy of Powderham Castle became extinct. He was homosexual, accused of having an affair as a young boy, and he was forced to live abroad, first in the United States and later in Paris, where he died in 1835
