Context

Context of Holographs | As the signature of the 1762 autograph letter is unclear, and could be Orson or Orton (no other name is given) it has been decided to catalogue it under the name of the recipient, the Revd. Mr. [John] Seddon, an English dissenting minister and tutor. Warrington is given as his address, where he was minister of Cairo Street Chapel, and Seddon was a co-founder and the first president of the Warrington Public Library (1758). He was also the first secretary of the Lancashire and Cheshire Widows' Fund (1764). He died suddenly after suffering a seizure in 1770. The recipient of the 1769 letter from Seddon, Archibald Hamilton Rowan, was an Irish celebrity and a founding member of the Dublin Society of United Irishmen. He was born in London, of Irish parents, and educated at Westminster School and Cambridge. The 1769 letter is also being catalogued under Seddon, as recipient, as the writer of it, J. Hamilton, is not able to be identified apart from the fact that he lived in Richmond
